Ice (or cold) therapy is the "I" of R.I.C.E. (rest, ice, compression, and elevation). It can be used to mitigate swelling of an injury and ease inflamed muscles and joints after athletic activity. It can also be used to alleviate chronic pain and arthritis. Cold therapy works by reducing blood flow to the target area, thereby reducing swelling and inflammation. It also reduces local sensitivity to pain.
