Chest Tube Placement (Thoracostomy)
Thoracostomy is a procedure involving the insertion of a thin plastic tube into the space between the lungs and the chest wall. The treatment works by attaching the tube to a suction device to remove excess fluid or air, or via pleurodesis, in which medication is delivered into the space to decrease the likelihood that fluid will accumulate. It is most commonly used for the treatment of pneumothorax, also known as a collapsed lung.
