A meniscus tear is an injury to the menisci, C-shaped pieces of cartilage that provide a cushion between the shinbone and the thighbone. The condition occurs as a result of forcefully twisting or rotating the knee. Symptoms include pain, swelling, stiffness, and a block to knee motion preventing full knee extension. Treatments include conservative options, including rest, ice and medication, as well as surgical options, including a meniscectomy and a meniscus repair.
