A bunion, also known as hallux valgus, is a bony bump formed on the joint at the big toe. The condition occurs when the big toe pushes against the adjacent toe, forcing the joint of the big toe to enlarge and protrude. Symptoms include pain when wearing shoes or walking, and skin over the bunion appearing red and sore. Treatments include wearing wider shoes with adequate toe room, reducing pressure on the big toe, and bunion surgery.
