An ankle sprain is an injury to the ligaments surrounding and connecting the bones of the leg to the foot. The condition occurs as a result of the ankle twisting or turning awkwardly, tearing the ligaments that hold the ankle bones and joints together. Symptoms include pain when bearing weight on the affected foot, tenderness, swelling, bruising, and ankle instability. Treatments include physical therapy and surgery, depending on the severity of the tear.
